Wizard's First Rule begins three weeks after Richard Cypher's father is murdered. Richard is searching for a vine that he found at his father's house after the murder when he sees a woman being chased by four men. He saves her from the men, who have been sent to kill her. The woman, Kahlan Amnell, is the mother confessor from the midlands, across the boundary that was supposed to separate the three lands, Westland, the Midlands and D'Hara. The boundaries are failing and Kahlan has been sent to find the great wizard who left the midlands years ago after becoming angry with the council. Richard helps her find the wizard, who names Richard as the seeker of truth. The three of them have to help defeat Darken Rahl, a maniack who wants to rule all three lands and will kill anyone who gets in his way. Richard and Kahlan fall in love and throughout the series they're separated, reunited and faced with bigger and bigger problems, the biggest problem being the evil empiror Jagang, a dream walker who is even more dangerous than Darken Rahl.
